(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – Saturday LRHS Track and Field competed alongside 41 other schools at the Steinbrenner invitational. The Girls’ varsity team placed first overall.

Junior Mason Ingallinera placed third and beat her personal record in the 3200m. Senior Samantha Van der Sommen placed first in high jump, and the 4x400m girls (Sophomore Maya Bridgeford, Junior Sydney Granack, Senior Lauren Ryanehart, and Senior Madeline Mcnitch) also achieved first place.

“I had a lot of fun competing at my second meet this year,” said freshmen Lilly Lynch. “I hope to keep improving as the season continues.”

The girls placed everywhere from first to eighth place at the meet. Each point scored from the events helped to get the them up to first place overall.

Head Coach Jeff Simmons said, “This win came down to the last event and we were down by one-and-a-half-points.  The girls won the 4x400m relay and won the meet by two-and-a-half points.  It wasn’t just that win, every point mattered in this meet, from the first place finished to the eighth place finishes.”

The LRHS track and field boys also did well at the invitational. Junior Eli Newman placed third reaching 13 feet and 10 inches in Pole Vault.

“The girls did a great job at the invitational last weekend,” said Newman. “I’m looking forward to having an even better season and improving in all of our events.”

This week, junior varsity (JV) will meet at St. Stevens High School on Wednesday, varsity will meet at Port Charlotte High School on Thursday. On Saturday LRHS is hosting the varsity relays invitational for all events.
