(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- Two Mustang seniors won Golden Herald Awards on Thursday, April 13.

Kate Tuchman and Tierney Thornhill, co-founders of the Girls in White Coats club at LRHS, won first-place awards.

The Golden Herald Award is presented by the Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton.

According to the Manatee Memorial website, “this award honors outstanding Manatee County high school seniors for noble service to their schools and communities.”

There are 16 Golden Herald categories and first and second place prizes are awarded. Tuchman won the science category and Thornhill won for citizenship.

“My attraction to science started when I was very little because I was diagnosed with a rare medical condition. I have been around doctors and specialists my whole life, so seeing everything from a patient standpoint made me more interested in working in healthcare,” Tuchman said.

The citizenship award was given in honor of the late Bob Bartz, who was president of the Manatee County Chamber of Commerce.

“It is for students who exemplify selflessness, kindness, and hard work,” Thornhill added.

“I am heavily involved in clubs at school as well as volunteering outside of school. I think it is so important that students applying have a lot of community service and involvement, as it is the biggest part of the award,” Tuchman continued.

Thornhill added, “it takes a dedicated and involved student and person in your community to win the award.”

Tuchman plans to continue her dream of working in healthcare after college. She is going to City College of New York and is pursuing the seven-year curriculum of medical studies.

Thornhill is pursuing her dreams at Florida State University and will continue to advocate for the mental health of athletes. She hopes to work in the field of medicine or media.

“LRHS has given me so many platforms to express my interests and find out who I wanted to be.”

Both Mustangs won medals, trophies, and a scholarship.
