Emma Bourdeau – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The winners of the Manatee History Day (MHD) History Fair have been announced and LRHS Mustangs won all three top places in the Senior Paper category.

Junior Angel Potter placed first. 

Junior Natalie Thomas was in second place and senior Jovana Hassan following in third.

Potter and Thomas qualifies to compete in the state history fair in Tallahassee on May 7-9.

They will continue to the National History Fair in June at the University of Maryland.

The Mustangs placed as follows –

First place – Angel Potter

  • Argo: Exploring New Frontiers in Exfiltration, Covert Operations, and International Relations

Second place – Natalie Thomas

  • Frontiers in Medicine: World War 1

Third place – Jovana Hassan

  • LCDs: The Beginning of a Digital Age

Potter’s work was also recognized with the “Best Use of Primary Sources” award.  Thomas won the “World History” award.

Potter said, “Every year I look forward to participating because it provides me with the freedom to research what I would like, and it challenges me to do better than I did in previous years.

“After graduation, I hope to come back and support the History Day program as a judge, since I believe that it is an incredibly valuable experience for students,” continued Potter.

Thomas said, “I spent weeks searching the internet trying to find primary sources as well as asking some of my teachers for recommendations to books that may be helpful to my topic.

“The hardest part was finding sources to use but once I found the right ones everything fell into place.”
