(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) -The LRHS varsity wrestling team finished 15th in the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) 3A Region 2 Championship last weekend at Osceola High School.

The LRHS regional qualifiers wrestled in Orlando with junior Nate Smith 285-pound taking second place and qualifying for the state tournament his second year in a row.  An injury will prevent him from competing.

Smith said, “I felt like I performed great, I am a 2-time state qualifier. I should have won it this year if it was not for my broken finger not allowing me to keep going. I’m looking to be the first wrestler and heavyweight to win it for Lakewood Ranch.”

During Smith’s finals match, he injured his finger and was unable to continue to compete.

Coach Pat Ancil said, “Special thanks to all the parents who came and supported the team as well as Coach Collier, Lancaster, Schwartz and Griese for making this a great and successful season!”

The following Mustangs received special recognition and final records:

  • 106 Logan Borcsane 36-16

“Although we will not be sending a state qualifier this season, the other nine regional qualifiers wrestled their hearts out and beyond our expectations but just weren’t able to make the blood round. There’s a reason they call Region 3A 2 the ‘Region of Doom’,” continued Ancil.
