(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – With registration around the corner, Mustangs are looking for challenging classes to take to look impressive for the future. LRHS offers a variety of Advanced Placement (AP) courses for Mustangs.
These rigorous courses are weighted on a 5.0 scale, meaning they can significantly increase one’s Grade Point Average (GPA).
Assuming the student passes the AP exam at the end of the year, they may earn college credit for the class, which allows the student to fulfill general education requirements for college.
In 2022, LRHS offered 24 AP classes and administered 1,300 AP exams at the end of the year.
This year, it is estimated that LRHS will administer 1,800 AP exams at an estimated cost of $155,000.
LRHS AP statistics teacher Ann Fleury believes AP courses are a great way to prepare for college.
“I believe AP classes prepare students for college assessment and gives students experience on what college classes expect,” Fleury said.
LRHS offers AP Capstone, a two-year program for select Mustangs. Students enrolled in this course may graduate with a Capstone diploma.
Mustangs take AP Seminar sophomore year followed by AP Research junior year.
AP Chemistry and Research teacher Tammy Harper recommends AP to students, as it can not only save students money in the future but also help students gain vital skills at an accelerated level.

“The AP program is just one path of educational studies available at Lakewood Ranch and is an opportunity for students to receive college credit at the high school level,” Harper said.
Sophomore Sydney Oostendorp is currently taking AP Seminar.
“The class is very flexible because we’re able to research and write about real-world problems,” Oostendorp said.
