Sydney Oostendorp – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS girls weightlifting team had a successful last home meet against Riverview High School yesterday.

Although they lost 42-43 in the Olympic weightlifting category, they won 44-43 in the Traditional category.

To honor of the seniors on the team the team held a farewell celebration for the following Mustangs –

  • Taylor Wood
  • Alex Layrisse
  • Kayla Barbosa
  • Danielle Morgan
  • Anna Alfonso
  • Alysa Oancia  

The season ended with many girls on the team hitting personal records (PRs).

The seniors entered the room dancing to music playing in the background.

After the meet, the team celebrated with snacks and took pictures in a room honoring the seniors.

The night ended with speeches to friends, family, teammates and coaches.

Senior Alex Layrisse said, “It’s been an amazing experience this year with all the support from the team and coaches. I loved being a captain to this team and I am so grateful for this opportunity.”

Girl weightlifting coach Elijah Weaver said, “I am so proud of all the seniors this year, and I am so glad that some of them are choosing to continue this sport after high school and I am so excited to see what they can do in the future.

“The Lady Mustangs will now begin to prepare for the postseason,” Weaver continued. “Young Warrior JV (junior varsity) Invitational is a regional weightlifting meet for JV lifters. The meet will be held January 24th. Also, District Championships for Varsity lifters will be held at Sunlake High School at Land O’ Lakes on January 28.”

On Wednesday the Mustangs defeated Sarasota High in both traditional and Olympic styles.
