(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS Mustangs, the 2022 7A softball state champions, will receive their championship rings on Monday, Dec. 19 at halftime of the varsity basketball game in the LRHS gymnasium.
Outgoing varsity softball coach TJ Goelz said, “I am looking forward to seeing all the players, including last year’s seniors, back together again and seeing the look in their eyes when they open the box to see their state championship rings!”
The team won the state championship game 8-2 against Lake Brantley High School, adding to their 30-2 record for 2022.
They were also ranked third in the nation and first in the state.
This was their second state championship. The Mustangs went back-to-back in 2021 and 2022.
Goelz said, “The first championship was special because it was four years in the making and it was the first one. The second one was special because it is very hard to go back-to-back, and we did that to the team that beat us twice, the only team to beat us, in the finals. Different but special paths to glory for sure.”

Goelz hopes that winning back-to-back state championships will keep the team’s expectations high.
“This will remind them that it can be done. Returning players will pass the traditions and expectations along to the new players and they will work towards the third state championship,” Goelz continued.
