(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS varsity wrestling team kicked off the 2022-23 season with a second-place trophy at the 12 team Lemon Bay Duals.

They ended the day winning four of the five rounds, a new team record. They wiped out Bayshore, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Port Charlotte, only to lose in the finals to Lemon Bay high school, the state’s fifth-ranked team.

Mustang head varsity coach Patrick Ancil said, “Big thanks to all the parents who made the trip down to Lemon Bay to cheer us on and to Mrs. Clifton for coordinating all the food and drinks for the team.”

This meet was the first for nine first-year wrestlers on the LRHS varsity team, allowing them all to gain useful experience.

The team was also led to success due to all the experienced wrestlers on the team such as seniors Evan Blake, Evin Leavy, Cody King, Connor Tomelden, and Logan Wright and juniors Will Moran and Nate Smith and sophomores Andres Anastasi.

Two specific wrestlers helped the LRHS team with their new team record of four wins and one loss. Wright and Smith both went 5-0 in their matches with 5 and 4 pins respectively.

“This team couldn’t have produced the results without all the time and hard work from the coaching staff consisting of Robert Collier, Nate Lancaster and Rocky Schwartz,” said Ancil.
