(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – While classroom lessons play a major role in students’ future, there are many components which contribute to the overall success of a student. This includes extracurricular activities, school programs, and athletics, all of which teach students important life skills which can be utilized in the future.

LRHS Battalion Senior Army Instructor Maj. Shaun O’Dea explained that the experiences JROTC Cadets learn helps them throughout their life.

“One of the biggest benefits that most Cadets experience is deep growth of self-confidence. We provide hands on experience in leading and managing others and push to develop personal growth mentally, physically and emotionally,” O’Dea said.

Senior Nicole Majewski has been in the JROTC program for four years.

“The leadership and public speaking skills that I’ve learned and practiced throughout my time in the program will help me not only in everyday socializing but also in my future career,” Majewski said.

Other students participate in extracurricular activities such as clubs.

Lakewood Leaders is a community-service based club, which offers many opportunities for students to gain experience within important aspects of life such as communication and responsibility.

Adviser Meghan Sugalski said, “Students learn how to speak up and step in. They are put in different volunteer opportunities and must fill the needs of that group for that event.”

Some clubs offer community service activities while others offer experiences in the real world.
