(LAKEWOOD RANCH FL,) – The Lakewood Singers have selected two members to compete in solo and ensemble Saturday at Riverview High School.

Chorus teacher Rebekah Lester chose chorus President senior Alli Thomas and Vice-President junior Cory Coyner to compete.

Thomas said, “Solo and ensemble is a competition held throughout the entire state of Florida. I was very excited Mrs. Lester chose me.”

The ratings go from poor, fair, good, excellent to superior. If Cory and Alli get straight superiors, they will qualify for states.

The singers will be evaluated on musicality, expression and choice of repertoire.

Thomas continued, “We get a list of songs to choose from. I picked ‘Always True to You and My Fashion’ from “Kiss me Kate.” I was already using it for my college auditions, so it’ll be great to get some feedback on the piece.”

This will be the first time in three years that LRHS singers compete in Solos and Ensembles.

Coyner said, “I chose the song ‘Next, Winter Come Slowly.’ I chose this song because it’s a very dramatic and sad piece which focuses on a more op version of singing. I also chose it because Christmas is right around the corner.”

The Lakewood Singers will have a free winter concert at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1.
