Cassidy McLellan – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – It is the time of year for senior Mustangs to begin applying to college.
Recommendation letters are an important part of applying to colleges.
While this time of year can be stressful, LRHS college and career advisor Carmen Purpus offers her assistance during the complex process.
Purpus said, “Admissions officers generally want to see letters of recommendations from high school teachers and the student’s guidance counselor. Find those who know what you have achieved while in school and what you are capable of achieving in college.
“Students should go into the college application process prepared. It can be confusing and require a lot of steps. There are many deadlines, and each college has their own requirements and deadlines,” she continued.
Recommendation letters should be descriptive, personal, and tailored to the application. They can include stories that demonstrate who you are beyond the grades and test scores.

Purpus advises Mustangs to apply early, research the schools they are interested in, and to contact the college admissions office for any questions.
“Complete the Common App as it streamlines the process of applying to multiple colleges and universities,” Purpus continued.
Seniors should make their Common App accounts and begin working on their applications as soon as possible, as it is a lengthy process and requires a lot of information.
