(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- The LRHS varsity football team beat the Cardinal Mooney Cougars  last Friday.

The Mustangs won 51-23.

The team displayed their defensive skills and had highlight-worthy receptions.

Head coach Rashad West said he’s happy with the season so far.

“The season has gotten off to a good stat, but there’s still a lot of season left and we need ot remain focused from week to week on improving as a team.”

Quarterback Clayton Dees and running back Kevin Everhart were both recognized as the top performers of the night.

Everhart said, “It was important to us to win this game because of our loss to them last year, and fortunately we all performed well as a team and stayed locked in throughout all four quarters.”

The Mustangs kept the Cougars on lockdown the entire game, allowing less than 10 points per quarter.

Senior Isaac Ashley’s 90-yard touchdown reception gave the team their first touchdown.

Junior Nick Sinacore also had an acrobatic catch on the next possession to put the Mustangs within 12 yards of the endzone.

The team will face the Braden River Pirates in a rivalry game at 6 p.m. Friday at home.

West said the intensity of the rivalry can be up to the Mustangs.

“We have to do our part to make this a real rivalry,” said West. “We haven’t played partucularly well against them as of late. I hope we are able to compete a bit better with them this year.”
