LRHS athletic director Kent Ringquist said HTPreps recognition is a tribute to hard work

Three Lakewood Ranch High School Athletes were recognized as Athlete of the Year during the 2021-2022 Sarasota Herald-Tribune HT Preps Sarasota, Manatee, and Charlotte County High School Sports Awards.

On Tuesday night, 24 varsity sports and 385 athletes were honored at Sarasota’s Van Wezel Performing arts.

Representing the Mustangs, Grace Marston won Athlete of the Year not only for Girls Cross Country but for Girls Track & Field as well.

Marston, a Georgia Tech commit, placed second in her state championship meet and was also ranked first in her class.

Representing the Boy athletes, Drew Clark was awarded Athlete of the Year for Soccer.

The Mustangs finished 18-2-1 led by Clark’s leadership and hard work.

The final Mustang awarded Athlete of the Year was the University of Florida commit, Cassidy McLellan.

McLellan has led the ninth ranked team in the nation and has been a great part of the LRHS softball team’s success.

The softball team plays Friday, May 26, in the State Semifinals against Davie Western at 12:30 p.m. in Clermont to hopefully get a shot at being back-to-back State Champions.

LRHS athletic director Kent Ringquist said, “The recognition LRHS received from HTPreps is a sign of how dedicated our student-athletes are to success both athletically and academically.  It’s a definite reflection on their overall character.

“I’d also like to thank HTPreps for their recognition of our students. It shows how dedicated this community is to its schools,” he continued.

At the ceremony, former Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay Devil Rays player Fred McGriff was the speaker for the night.

HTPreps reporter Doug Fernandes wrote McGriff, “decidedly taciturn when he played, proved an engaging and lively guest.”
