The LRHS softball Mustangs celebrate their regional title

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS varsity softball team is heading back to states.

After the top-ranked Mustangs’ 2-0 victory against Newsome High School Friday, the team secured their trip back to Clermont, where the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) state championship tournament is held.

Sophomore Ella Dodge won her 23rd game of the year, pitching a complete game with five strikeouts and only allowing five hits.

Two seniors, Ella Coiner and Taylor Shephard, had an outstanding game offensively and defensively.

Shephard was 2-3 with a double and an RBI.

Shepard said, “I was really happy to come through for my team. Friday’s game was a lot of fun because you could feel the energy throughout our team and even our fans.”

Coiner was also 2-3 with a double.

She also threw a runner out at home while she was on the field. This was a huge play since it kept Newsome scoreless.

Coiner added, “I am really looking forward to going back to states. Being with my teammates in the hotel and playing in the states games is a lot of fun and I cannot wait.”

The Mustangs’ (28-2) next game is the state semifinal game against Davie Western (16-8-1), scheduled for 12:30 p.m., Friday May 27 in Clermont.
