LRHS teacher Tammy Harper (l) is recognized by Rep. Vern Buchanan

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – LRHS science teacher Tammy Harper has been awarded Florida’s 16th District Congressional Teacher Award.

The Congressional Teacher Award, established by local congressman Vern Buchanan in 2014, recognizes exceptional Suncoast teachers for their achievement in helping students succeed.

Harper said, “It was an unexpected honor and I’m proud to represent my profession as well as my school. I love LRHS so much. Our Mustangs are exceptional, and the staff is really committed to helping them all achieve their best.”

Buchanan said in a press conference, “While they may not always receive the appreciation or recognition they deserve, teachers have one of the most important and difficult professions of all.”

Harper was the only high school teacher from Manatee County to be recognized.

LRHS assistant principal Jeanie Galindo said, “Harper prefers to be an invisible force that lifts others up. She is what is good and right in public education. We are a better school and community because she loves the Mustangs here at LRHS.”

Harper found her passion for teaching while pursuing a degree in medical technology at Michigan State. She then went on to earn a master’s in education at Eastern Michigan to become certified to teach.
