Cassidy McLellan – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- The LRHS varsity softball team played and won three games this past week.

The first game of the week was on Monday, April 4 against Sarasota High and the Mustangs won 9-0.

All three pitchers, senior Ella Coiner, junior Peyton Knight, and sophomore Ella Dodge combined for a one-hit shutout.

Coiner said, “I was a little nervous when I went into the game because it was raining but I was able to overcome it and allow no hits.”

Senior Sydney McCray had a successful night at the plate going 3-for-4.

McCray said, “I was very pleased with the way we played and the energy that we have. If we keep that and keep going, everything will be good.”

Tuesday, April 5 the Mustangs beat Parrish Community High 6-5.

“I was confident going into this game and hitting against this pitcher because the last time we faced them, I did well. And it also helps that we are playing them at our field,” said LRHS senior Kelsey Vogel.

Her confidence showed as Vogel hit the walk-off single to win the game in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The team’s third game of the week was Thursday, April 7 against North Fort Myers High.  The Mustangs won 11-0.

Senior Taylor Shephard was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Shephard said, “I feel like last night we had good energy and were happy for others success. I am excited to see what we will accomplish in the playoffs.”

The teams next game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 12 against Charlotte at home.
