Ainsley Ellis – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – LRHS Peers as Partners in Learning, also known as Pit Crew, is a class that shows Mustangs the academic and social benefits of working with classmates with disabilities.
Junior Reese Wellander said, “Pit Crew is a great class to be in. Hanging out with these Mustangs is the highlight of my day. They come to school excited to be here and make LRHS a positive environment.”
Mustangs enrolled in this course will learn and apply knowledge and skills practiced in the areas of academic engagement, communication, social barriers, leadership, problem solving, and other disability-related topics.

Senior Alexa Hymes said, “I love being in Pit Crew because I get to interact with and help Mustangs I don’t have in my other classes.”
Some of these skills include universal design for learning, person-first language, presumed competence, social justice for minority populations, and media representation of diverse people.
Pit Crew teacher Melissa Koehlinger said, “Pit Crew is for students that have different abilities to get the most out of their high school experience.”
