(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – LRHS senior Sam Leavy is a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship program.
The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic accreditation and scholarship contest established in 1955. Approximately 1.5 million high school students participate in this program each year.
According to National Merit, “In the National Merit Scholarship Program, three types of Merit Scholarship awards are offered to Finalists: National Merit $2500 Scholarships, corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards, and college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards.”
Leavy said, “I am very proud to win National Merit Finalist. I think it shows my hard work and that hard work pays off. I am extremely honored to be considered.”
LRHS principal Dustin Dahlquist added, “Sam is definitely a bright, young man and is deserving of this award. He is talented in the academic world but also a leader out on the soccer field as well.”
LRHS math teacher Meghan Sugalski said, “Given how intelligent Sam is, I think Sam deserves this scholarship and will be very deserving if he wins.”
“Sam is a wonderful student, always volunteering and helping others in class” replied Advance Placement (AP) Lang teacher Deborah McCarthy.
Leavy’s peers also feel he is very deserving of this award.
Senior Dylan Katchen said, “I have known Sam since elementary school, and I could always tell his intelligence was far past kids in his class. He is very smart and athletic, all-around great guy.”
National Merit Scholarship winners of 2022 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July.
