Haven Hunter – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – After a successful season, LRHS senior Ranson Coons placed third at the 2022 Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) 3A wrestling state championship.
Head coach Patrick Ancil said, “This young man lost his first match on Thursday and battled back winning five straight matches.”
Although Coons lost his first match, he finished off his season beating a Newsome wrestler, 17-2 to clinch third place.
Coons told the East County Observer, “I obviously wanted a gold medal. If I hadn’t injury defaulted my last regional match, I would have been on the other side of the state bracket. Maybe I would have been able to reach the finals. But I’m glad my high school career ended with a win, and by technical fall in a third-place match. That’s one big positive.”
Coons also gave his thanks and appreciation for his mentor Ancil for constantly pushing and encouraging him to persevere through everything.
“I have loved growing my relationships with my teammates and being able to have such a great mentor for a coach,” added Coons.
