Cassidy McLellan – Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS varsity softball team had another full week of games for the second week of the season.

On Monday, Feb. 28, the team won 10-1 against McKeel Academy.

Sophomore Ella Dodge got her second win of the year pitching five innings with six strikeouts. Junior Peyton Knight closed the game out pitching two innings.

Knight said, “I loved getting the opportunity to finish the game off strong and support my team.”

Senior Ella Coiner had an excellent night at the plate, going two for two with a homerun and a single.

Coiner explained, “I had to remind myself to not over think it and to just keep it simple. After my first at bat, I got more confident so now I am just going to go from there.”

The team’s second game was Tuesday, March 1 against Charlotte.  The Mustangs won 7-6.

Senior Sydney McCray was three-for-five with a double and two runners batted in (RBIs).

McCray said, “During the game, I felt nothing but the hunger to get things done. I knew that all we needed to do was trust ourselves and our ability to play the game and we can be successful.”

Lastly, on Thursday, March 3 the Mustangs played their third game of the week against Calvary Christian and won 14-6. The team had a total of 19 hits.

Junior Addyson Bruneman was three for four with a double and a triple.

Bruneman said, “It was good that we started hitting the ball hard and coming together as a team.”

The varsity team has a full week next week playing five games. Home games include Tuesday, Mar 8 at 6p.m., Wednesday, Mar 9 at 6 p.m., and Friday, Mar 11 at 1 p.m.
