(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – On Wednesday the LRHS varsity baseball and softball teams competed against each other in a skills challenge.

The challenges included homerun derby, baserunning speed challenge, throwing accuracy, pitching accuracy, and around the horn (throwing around the bases for speed). The bonus finale included softball pitchers versus baseball batters.

The baseball team won every event except the homerun derby and bonus finale.

Coiner and Dees battled to a 3-2 count and Coiner won the at-bat, getting Dees to swing and miss at the 3-2 pitch.

Coiner said, “I was nervous at first but after the first pitch I calmed down. Then I got into a groove and started pitching really well.”

Dees added, “I went in there thinking I was going to hit a bomb off her and then I couldn’t even see the first pitch. It came at me way faster than I expected.”

The softball team’s first game is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 21 at home and the baseball team’s first game is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at home.
