Mustang wrestlers continue success

Haven Hunter and Olivia Ryan -Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS wrestling team has had a successful season so far.

The Mustangs defeated Sarasota Military Academy (SMA) in their first home dual match on Jan. 19.

The boys varsity team beat SMA 59-24 with multiple pins by –

  • Tim Clark (113)
  •  Wyatt Loynd (126)
  •  Marcus Cincotta (138)
  •  Evin Leavy (160)
  •  Nico Clifton (170)
  •  Ranson Coons (195)
  •  Nate Smith (285)

The LRHS junior varsity (JV) team also defeated SMA 42-6, with two pins by sophomore Alex Torres (113) and sophomore Cal Hengel (195).

Head coach Patrick Ancil said, “There was a great turnout from all the Mustangs and parents and also to all the alumni wrestlers who showed up to support the team.”

The team also took home the second-place trophy at the Bruins Duals at Bayshore High School on Saturday, Jan. 22.

The varsity wrestlers took on 11 teams in the competition, beating nine.

Outstanding Mustang wrestlers from the competition were –

  • Ranson Coons 4-0 with three pins firstplace
  • Tim Clark 5-0 with three pins first place
  • Cody King 4-1 with three pins first place
  •  Evin Leavy 4-0 with two pins first place
  • Diego Torres 4-0 with three pins first place
  • Will Moran 3-0 with three pins first place
  • Nate Smith 5-0 with three pins first place
  • Alex Torres 4-1 with three pins second place
  • Wyatt Loynd 4-1 with three pins second place
  • Connor Tomelden 4-1 with 4 pins second place
  • Saul Sanchez 4-0 with three pins second place
  • Andres Anastasi 3-2 with three pins third place

Wrestling captain senior Ranson Coons was also awarded the Ricky Gullett Outstanding Wrestler award for his outstanding wrestling skills and sportsmanship.

Head coach Patrick Ancil said he appreciates all the parents and those who have supported the team.

Ancil said, “Thanks to all the parents and Mustangs that came out to support the team.”
