(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS cheerleading team started their competition season this month against Braden River, Parrish Community, and Weeki Wachi High Schools.

On Saturday, Dec. 11 the team placed first in their division against Braden River, Parish Community, and Weeki Wachi.

French said, “When stepping out on the mat on Saturday, the team looked much more confident than their first time competing.”

Discipline secretary and coach Bailee French added, “The team did a great job performing for the first time in front of others. It sets a good baseline for what we need to improve on.”

On Tuesday, Dec. 7, the team competed for the first time against the Braden River cheerleading team. Coaches on each team scored their routines to determine who won.

Both teams’ routines required multiple tumbling sequences, stunting skills, and a cheer that promotes school spirit.

Captain sophomore Mia Twyford said, “The hardest part of our routine would be the pyramid. It is like building a machine with many different moving parts. Instead of metal, you are building with humans.”

The team will be back in action on Friday, Dec. 17 at Parish Community High School.

Twyford said, “From now until regionals, the team is going to focus on enhancing our tumbling skills and perfecting each part of the routine.”
