(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – The LRHS National Honor Society (NHS) has had a successful year so far with many volunteer programs that help give back to the community.

Each Thursday NHS hosts the “Teacher Helper” program. NHS members help teachers around their classroom doing various tasks.

Senior Mallory Lloyd said, “Each teacher has you do something different; some need help cleaning classrooms, grading papers, or organizing files.”

Outside of LRHS, NHS members also attend numerous events in the community. This includes “YReads” and the Farmhouse Sanctuary.

YReads is a program held at Moody Elementary where volunteers help elementary school students who are struggling to read.

Senior Faith Jeffery said, “When volunteering at YReads, I helped elementary school students with basic reading and vocabulary skills. I read several books with the students to encourage them to enhance their skills.”

The Farmhouse Sanctuary is a farm in Myakka that houses several different types of animals. Each volunteer can pick which animals they would like to work with and help feed and care for them.

Senior Briley Vestal said, “At the Farmhouse Sanctuary I got to take care of horses, pigs, and goats. I also helped clean up around the farm.”
