(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – Manatee Schools have incorporated a program called “Character Strong” into the school day this year. The goal is to emphasize the importance of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL).

SEL highlights self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.

According to Characterstrong.com, “Patience, kindness, honesty, respect, selflessness, forgiveness, commitment, and humility,” are the main focuses of the program and help with character development.

LRHS discipline dean Jake Sponsel said fourth period teachers are assigned to do one lesson a week until the course is completed. Each lesson should take approximately five to ten minutes.

Some key areas the program hopes to enforce are healthy ways to feel, act, and care. This includes setting and reaching goals and how to work well with others.
