Jared Baker – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- The National College Athletic Association (NCAA) football season will kick off on Saturday, Sept. 4, exciting many Mustangs.
The atmosphere at games this year will be different because stadiums are back to full capacity after barring fans last year.
LRHS Information Technology Fundamentals teacher Joseph Cuervo is also the LRHS junior varsity (JV) football coach.
“My favorite college team is University of South Florida (USF) because that is where I went to college, and it was a great school,” he said.
USF has not been doing well lately as they have been 4-16 the past two years andhasn’t been in a bowl game since 2018.
Cuervo hopes that changes this year.
“One of the things I want to see happen is USF making a bowl game this year and win it,” he said.
Cuervo also thinks that the University of Cincinnati can be the underdog team this year, “They are in the American Conference and if they were to make the playoffs, they would become the first team not from the Power Five conferences.”
Sophomore Leo Henderson said, “I am excited to see Ohio State play because they are my favorite team and I have been watching them since I was a little kid.”
Henderson explained, “The thing I am looking forward to is the wide-receiver duo at Ohio State with Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, they were ranked the best wide receiver duo heading into the 2021 college season.”
Henderson believes that Ohio State can make a run for the national championship, “We have some big returns on defense, Stroud (Quarterback) is one of the best coming into college.”
Junior Ryan Hanson said he is excited to see how Florida State University (FSU) will perform this year since they are his favorite team.
Hanson added, “The Seminoles have been a team that I have consistently watched my whole life and am hoping for a championship this year.”
