Mallory Lloyd – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – On Friday LRHS seniors Shivanie Ghransiam and Owen Catlett received $2,500 scholarshipS for the Champs Sports Foundation Scholarship contest.
The certificates were presented to Ghransiam and Catlett at noon near the LRHS flagpoles.
The scholarships resulted from an essay contest for male and female athletes from six high schools in Manatee County dealing with what sports meant to them.
Champs Sports project planning manager Theresa Valentine said, “Two students from each high school were selected, and Ghansiam and Catlett were the LRHS winners.”
“There were some really good essays that we had everyone rank top three, and their essay had them come out the winners,” Valentine continued.
Ghansiam said, “It is an honor to earn this scholarship. I have learned so much on and off the field and am able demonstrate that not only as a captain and leader for my flag football team, but as a student and as a person.”
Catlett said, “I just finished senior year for track and cross country, and hopefully I will be able to continue running or doing something with running at the University of Florida (UF). Sports have helped bring my family together as my mom is also a runner.”
Ghransiam will also be attending UF and will be studying political science, attending law school afterward.
