(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – LRHS senior Jessica Thompson has earned a 2021 National Honor Society (NHS) Scholarship.

Thompson was chosen as a national semifinalist out of nearly 10,000 applicants. She will receive a $3,200 scholarship toward her higher education.

NHS adviser and LRHS English teacher Tracy Gregory said, “We are so proud that Jessica has been selected as an NHS Scholarship recipient.”

Thompson found out she won during lunch and was thoroughly surprised.

“I was definitely not expecting to receive the scholarship since so many people applied for it,” said Thompson.

Scholarship recipients are chosen based on execution of the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

Thompson thought of the scholarship after being in NHS for two years and was drawn to apply after becoming the Secretary.

Thompson continued, “I felt that because I am an officer this year, I understand what NHS is about and what it values.”

Receiving a 2021 NHS scholarship is a high honor rewarded to less than 600 students each year.

The NHS website stated, “Congratulations to this year’s NHS Scholarship recipients!”
