LRHS sophomore Kathleen Cravens has been named to the All-State Concert Band.

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – LRHS sophomore Kathleen Cravens was named to Florida All-State Concert Band.

Every year, student musicians across Florida audition to become a part of the prestigious All-State Band.

The process begins in May, when audition music is posted.  This audition requires students to perform a technical and lyrical piece, as well as 12 major scales.

Usually there is a sight-reading portion, but it was cancelled this year due to COVID-19.

The audition follows in September, which is normally performed live in front of judges.  This year was a bit different; students submitted virtually through an app called “Audacity”.

Cravens commented, “I worked with my private teacher, Bill Barbanera, and practiced daily for at least an hour per day to improve my technique. During quarantine, I often practiced up to three hours per day.”

This year’s conference was virtual, with sessions from band directors and college professors.

Cravens added, “I am honored that I was selected this year. The best part was the saxophone master class I attended because I received some helpful tips to improve my practice routine.”

One piece of advice Cravens would give is to “relax and have fun.”
