Haven Hunter– Special to Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- With recent events that have been happening, it is more important than ever for minorities to find reassurance in their local communities.

The Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) is a great resource for LBTQA+ and Allied peoples at the Ranch.  LGBTQA+ Mustangs can find reassurance and acceptance at the GSA club on campus and it helps provide solidarity for those who identify or ally the LGBTQA+ community.

History teacher and club adviser Ben Hall stated, “The club is a safe space for people to socialize without fear or anxiety.”

Unlike many other clubs on campus, GSA does not compete in any competitions; however, in the following years it has been hinted that there may be some mini competitions within LRHS GSA.

Many of the club’s activities include inclusive bonding exercises, games and other fun social activities to keep members interested and connected.

This club’s goal is to help people of the community find others with similar interests and broaden their horizons, socially. This helps to assure members that they are valid and cared for despite the comment’s others may make.

LRHS’s GSA was the first of its kind in Manatee County, starting in 2014. Now, several schools around the area host clubs that help bring reassurance to members and the community.

LRHS GSA volunteers at Manatee County’s Pride Festival every year that they can.

This event usually occurs around March.  Unfortunately, the 2020 Pride Festival was canceled due to COVID-19, but the 2021 Pride Festival is still scheduled to go on.
