Lakewood Leaders ready for a year of service

Ryan Hanson- Mustangs Ahead

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- Clubs at the Ranch are starting up again, and Lakewood Leaders is no exception.

Lakewood Leaders is a club that facilitates volunteer service throughout the community. The idea of Lakewood Leaders was created by journalism teacher Thomas Honsa when the school opened in 1998.

Lakewood Leaders focuses on community service throughout the community and helps at many different events during the year.

Upcoming events include Hunsader Farms and the Southwest Florida Therapy Animals.

Beyond their upcoming events Lakewood Leaders encourages Mustangs to volunteer at local foodbanks. Mustangs can volunteer with these food banks at any time, if interested in click here.

Lakewood Leaders has had some challenges due to Covid-19. According to LRHS math teach and sponsor Meghan Sugalski, “One of our bigger events ‘Stuff the Bus’ was cancelled. Also due to the three modalities of learning, we are unable to be responsible for (tracking) everyone’s (volunteer) hours as in previous years.”

Rather than volunteer forms being handed after events, members now must get their own community service forms from the school guidance office and fill it out on their own.

Other changes include the requirement of one event per semester rather than two and the club’s participation in Project Manatee virtually. More details to follow.
