(LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fl) – The conductor is a crucial part of any musical performance and for the LRHS orchestra program, every year one student gets the chance to take part in that.

This year that special student was senior cello player Angelina Ortiz.

The student conductor gets to conduct the entire orchestra for one song out of the whole performance at Music Performance Assessments (MPAs) and at concerts. This student is selected each year by the orchestra director Daniel Shafer.

“We have an audition whenever I’m trying to find the new conductor and this year Angelina looked the best to me and I felt as if she could prove very vital to our orchestra and do her job to perfection,” said Shafer.

At MPAs, the student conductor is graded in their own category apart from the rest of the orchestra that focuses solely on their conducting.

At this year’s District MPAs, Ortiz was rated Superior for her student conducting performance.

This year the entire orchestra achieved superior at the District MPAs as well.

The job of the student conductor is a huge role that takes great talent and skill and this year, Ortiz was perfect for it.
