(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) announced the winners of the Winter 2020 Academic Championship. The competition is based on the cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of the teams in different sports.
The LRHS boys’ basketball team placed first in the state with a cumulative GPA of 3.437.
Junior basketball sports manager Peyton Nestleroad said, “The boys basketball team really pride ourselves on our academic and athletic ability. We set out to not only achieve on the court but also in school with our grades. We’re so proud of getting first in the state for the winter academic championship”
The LRHS girls’ basketball team placed fifth with a 3.59 cumulative GPA. The LRHS boys’ soccer team placed fourth with a 3.570 cumulative GPA, and the LRHS cheer team placed fifth with a 3.582 cumulative GPA.
LRHS cheerleader Kalyssa Kuhling said Mustang cheerleaders are held to a high standard.
“We manage to juggle many tasks as cheerleaders, whether it’s practicing for hours after school, going to work, and keeping our grades up,” she said. “We all work very hard in school and cheer and it pays off. We managed to win fifth in the state and are proud of not only our win, but our academics as well.”
Overall, LRHS placed eighth for the 2019-20 state standings in class 7A. LRHS is on track to finish in the top ten for the eighth year in row for the academic championship. The results for the entire year will be released after spring sports come to end.
LRHS athletic director Kent Ringquist said, “Year after year, we always do excellent when it comes to our sports and competition in the FHSAA tournament and we also do well in the academic awards at state level.”
