Evelyn Bachman – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – Many Mustangs across campus are eager to find out if they made it into the new Peer Inclusion Team, or “PIT Crew,” program that will start at LRHS next school year. On the registration form it is named, “Peers as Partners”.
Each student enrolled in the program will support a student with a disability in a core class or an elective. The program is focused on providing students with disabilities access to success in the general classroom.
During the first two weeks of the class, peers will be trained and coached as their role as a PIT Crew member. Each student will have a chance help in their area of strength. Areas of strength include, but are not limited to, courses such as math, English, art, etc.
PIT Crew administrator and LRHS Exceptional Student Education specialist Julie Young said, “All students are capable of learning, but many need support, which sometimes can be provided by a trained peer.”
The main goal of this program is to impact the LRHS community.
“By using the power of our peers we can change, leading to a fully inclusive campus, where all students feel supported and connected,” said Young.
One of the students that applied was sophomore Mariska VanLinder.
“I think it’s going to be a lot of fun and a rewarding experience,” said VanLinder.
This program is unique because it is not only held in school as an elective but students taking part will be earning bright future service hours.
