The Mustang JROTC orienteering teams found success last weekend.

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- On Saturday, Feb. 15, the LRHS Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) Orienteering team competed in a race at T. Mabry Carlton Reserve in Venice, FL.

Orienteering is a cross country-type competition in which the runners use maps and compasses to find demarcated points in a specified area.

The team took first place in the Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced divisions, as well as first overall.

Junior Elise West competed in the Advanced division and placed third at the meet.

“I ran fast enough, but I would second guess my route choice for too long before making a decision, which cost me some time,” commented West.

Junior Lily Fox, a squad leader in Alpha company, is on the Novice team, and placed third.

“I wasn’t very confident going in, but, after I found that first point, I gained confidence like I usually do,” stated Fox. “I was just focused on finding the next point.”

The team’s next race is on Saturday, Feb. 22 at North Port High School. This race will be Score-O instead of point-to-point, meaning that runners have one hour to find as many points as they can.
