(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- As Valentine’s Day rolls around, the girls’ lacrosse teams prepares for their season kick off tournament on Saturday.
After only two weeks of practice, both the varsity and newly formed junior varsity (JV) girls lacrosse teams get ready for their first games of the year at the annual Lax Against Leukemia Lacrosse Tournament.
Held at Premiere Sports Complex on State Road 70, the lacrosse tournament is traditionally the kickoff for all high school girls lacrosse teams in the area.
The start of a new season isn’t the only excitement for the LRHS teams. While the varsity team continues into its third season, it’ll be JV’s first season at LRHS.
Coaching the new team are former players Audrey Mahoney and Fernanda Flores. While being the new team on the block can be challenging, the team is working its hardest to establish themselves.
“I think we are going to do good! We still have a lot of work to do, but I’m looking forward to watching how the girls play and determining areas of improvement,” said head coach Mahoney.
“This will be many of the girls first lacrosse games ever so it’s going to be very exciting!” said Mahoney.
But the girls on the JV team aren’t the only ones grasping a new sport; for junior Ashley Pascarella, the new experience has been both exciting and stressful.
“I’m most excited to play against other schools and learn more about the game. Of course, I have first game jitters but I hope to put those nerves out on the field and give it the highest intensity and effort I can,” she explained.
Varsity’s first game will be at 10 a.m. against Sickles and JV team will be playing Out of Door Academy White team at 10:30 a.m.
