Ranch Reflections are articles written by students who want to share their experiences, thoughts, and concerns. This is a great opportunity for students to branch out beyond traditional news stories.  This edition features senior Janelle Bayor’s finding her first job.

Jenelle Bayor – Mustangs Ahead

reflection icon(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- As a junior in high school I am finally getting my first job. A lot of students at LRHS get jobs as freshmen or sophomores. The most common first jobs I see most at our school are grocery baggers at Publix, host/hostess at smaller restaurants, and bussers at restaurants.

I was never pushed by my parents to find a job until now. They believe working at this age will prepare me for later in life and give me some useful life skills. I wasn’t very thrilled about getting a job because I enjoy my free time and couldn’t find a job I would genuinely enjoy.

After a while of looking for a job, an email was sent out to my swim coach, Kyle Steinberg, about Goldfish Swim School looking for high school swimmers wanting to apply to be a swim instructor for young children.

Being a competitive swimmer for six years, this job piqued my interest because it’s something I would enjoy doing and I could learn easily. I also worked with the LRHS Mini-Mustangs pre-school program so that has helped me work with and teach young children.

I submitted my application and waited for an answer. Of course, I was a little scared because it was one of my first job applications and didn’t know if they would want to hire me.

Around a day later, I got an email back saying they would like to schedule a phone interview. I ended up doing well on the phone interview and went in for a face-to-face interview about two weeks later. After that, I was told they would like to hire me.

I got my first job. I’m so excited to be a swim instructor and lifeguard as my first job because it’s something different and I’ll be doing something I’ve always enjoyed.

I will be saving up the money I make for college and to pay for part of my trip to Europe over the summer.
