LRHS orienteers find early season success

JROTC(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – On Saturday, Dec. 7, the LRHS Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) Orienteering team hosted and competed in the Suncoast Orienteering meet at Greenbrook Adventure Park. This was the team’s second official meet of the season.

The Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced teams placed first overall, and the Orienteering team also placed first overall.

Orienteering is a cross country-type competition in which the runners use maps and compasses to find demarcated points in a specified area.

Junior Elise West, Battalion Assistant S-3 (AS3), is on the Advanced team.

“It was familiar ground, but I was still pretty cautious about busting brush,” said West, “I’m glad I placed second, but it was a really long run.”

Freshman Samantha Rees is on the Novice team.

“It’s my first year on Orienteering, but I’m feeling really confident about the rest of the season,” said Rees.

Lt. Col Richard Roller, the LRHS JROTC program’s Senior Army Instructor (SAI), is the coach for the Orienteering team.

“We only had two cadets DNF (Did Not Finish), which means they didn’t finish the course for any number of reasons. With these two cadets, they just missed a point,” said Roller, “But having only two out of 41 competitors DNF is great, and shows that they all know how to navigate, even the two that made mistakes.”
