(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – LRHS has a history of sending students to the next level of sports and LRHS alumni Jordan Schmucker is a prime example.

Former Mustang Jordan Schmucker (17) takes the court for Mars Hill.

Schmucker graduated from LRHS last year and is a freshman playing volleyball at Mars Hill University in North Carolina.

Schmucker was a four-year varsity starter for the Lady Mustangs’ volleyball team and played any position the team needed.

In her senior campaign, she helped lead the team to a regional semifinal, which was the farthest the Mustangs had been since 2014.

This year, Schmucker has played in all 30 games for the Mars Hill Mountain Lions, who won 15.

She was second on the team in assists with 510 and fifth in service aces with 13.

Schmucker said, “One of the biggest differences for me was how far we traveled, the furthest drive in my conference was four hours, which we went to Coker University (in South Carolina).”

Mars Hill University is a Division II school that plays in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC), which includes schools from Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Schmucker also said, “In college, we practice six days a week and have workouts about twice a week.”

This isn’t that different from high school volleyball where practices range from five to six days a week and workouts one to times a week.

But, Schmucker added, “The game’s a lot faster from when I was in high school and it was different once I got to the conference playoffs, there was a lot more pressure to get into the NCAA tournament.”

The Mountain Lions made it to the SAC quarterfinals where they fell, 0-3, to Carson-Newman University the eventual conference winners.
