ESOL is a program that helps kids who speak another language and are learning English to gain opportunities in education and careers.

Haushalter has been a substitute around LRHS for years, but she is thankful for the opportunity to teach these kids English.

“Being the new ESOL teacher has been an eye-opening experience so far,” Haushalter said. “The students are so eager to learn English and are grateful for this opportunity.”

Haushalter believes that there are many positives of being an ESOL teacher.

“The kids appreciate all you do for them,” Haushalter said. “They know and realize how much they need you and how much you do for them.”

On top of being able to help her students, Haushalter said that her students help her in many aspects.

“Only speaking a little bit of Spanish, I teach the kids English and in return, I pick up on some of the Spanish language,” Haushalter said. “I learn something new every day.

“My goal is to help the students learn all the English they need to learn to be successful in school, on tests, out in society and in their future,” said Haushalter.

Haushalter’s initial experience teaching ESOL was stressful but she is thrilled to be able to help her students and encourage them to achieve their best potential.

“I’ve been working every night after school and every day on the weekends to try to be prepared for everything that comes my way as well as meeting new people who are helping me,” Haushalter said. “I try to focus on that because I know that eventually, it will be great.”
