Sports(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – On Fri., Nov. 15, two Mustangs made a splash in Stuart, FL in their state swim meets.

Senior Emily Massengale swam the 100 meter fly and 100 meter backstroke and sophomore Dimiter Zafirov competed in the 200 meter freestyle and 100 fly.

Zafirov placed third in the 200 free which earned him an All-American Consideration time. Zafirov placed eighth in the 100 fly.

Massengale placed 16th in the 100 back.  It was her last high school swim meet.

“Although I had hoped to place higher, it was an honor to represent my school as one of the top 24 athletes,” Massengale said.  Only 24 students qualify for state finals.  “I will miss being a member of the high school team and a team captain.”

The swim team is in Class 4A, which means the competition is tough, since the biggest schools are competing against each other.

“It was a really fast state meet,” said head coach Kyle Steinberg.  “Some of the winning times were close to NCAA cuts. The schools are big in our class, so swimmers usually come from excellent club teams associated with the schools.  I’m very proud of both swimmers and the hard work they’ve put in to get here.”
