Mustangs to swim for state titles

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- The LRHS Swim Team competed at the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Region 2 Meet on Friday, Nov. 8 at the Long Center in Clearwater, FL. The girls came in eighth place and the boys came in 13th place.

Fourteen Mustang swimmers qualified for this meet.

“Most of our kids that swam had a best time or very close to it. I’m proud of everybody that went, everybody did a great job,” said head coach Kyle Steinberg.

The swimmers that placed in the top five at this meet were sophomore Dimiter Zafirov who came in second place in the boys’ 100-yard butterfly and came in third place in the boys’ 200-yard freestyle; and senior Emily Massengale who came in second place in the girls’ 100-yard backstroke and came in fourth place in the girls’ 100-yard butterfly.

Individual swimmers who placed in the top ten at this meet were senior Katelynn Coons who came in tenth place in the girls’ 50-yard freestyle and the girls’ 100-yard freestyle; and sophomore Frank Runge who came in ninth place in the boys’ 500-yard freestyle.

The girls’ 200-yard medley relay came in sixth place and consisted of Massengale, freshman Rebecca Pilcher, junior Suzanne Aguirre, and Coons. The girls’ 400-yard freestyle Relay came in sixth place and consisted of Aguirre, sophomore Phoebe Duval, Coons, and Massengale.
