features icon(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- The 2019-20 LRHS wrestling season is right around the corner and head coach Pat Ancil is looking forward to a successful season this year. Ancil said there are many student-athletes this year who will bring success to the program.

Mustangs Ahead (MA): What do you expect for this upcoming wrestling season?

Pat Ancil (PA): I expect this to be a very strong group. We have about ten or eleven seniors and a strong group of underclassmen, including some exciting freshman.

MA: How long have you coached wrestling at LRHS?

PA: This is my fourteenth year. I was the assistant coach from 2007 to 2016 and then I stepped up to being head coach. I’ve been involved in the sport for fifty-five years.

MA: How has the wrestling program at LRHS grown over the years?

PA: We’ve placed in the top ten for team grade point average in the last ten years and in 2015-2016, we were first in the state. We’ve had state qualifiers in the last twelve years.

MA: Has there ever been an iconic moment as the LRHS wrestling coach?

PA: The one that I remember the most was getting my first state qualifier in 2010.

MA: What makes wrestling special?

PA: I think it’s an individual skill-based sport and it’s always just you against your opponent so you can’t blame others for your own mistakes.
