LRHS FFA tops in forestry competition

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- LRHS FFA Forestry teams competed on Oct. 10 at Cecil Webb in Charlotte County FFA’s. This is the first forestry team at LRHS in seven years.

LRHS agriculture teacher and FFA adviser Janyel Taylor said, “We are happy to announce that Team A took first place and will be moving onto states and Team B took third place at Districts!”

They are now in the final 11 in the state and will compete in Perry, Florida on Nov. 7-8.

Team A consists of Skyler Wood, Kendyll Munger, Merissa Mahoney, and Savannah Cannon.

Skyler Wood placed first in Timber Cruising. Kendyll Munger got third in Timber cruising overall, third in tool ID overall, and second in Maps Interpretation overall. Merissa Mahoney placed third in forest disorders overall, second in dendrology overall, and second in general knowledge overall.

Savannah Cannon got third place overall Forestry Knowledge, second place in forest disorders overall, and third place in maps interpretation overall.

Team B consists of Chloe Flournoy, Travis Ference, and Saige Freitag. Chloe Flournoy got second place overall for Timber Cruising.

FFA members had to identify trees (dendrology), interpret maps, identify diseases and insects that affect trees, identify tools in the forestry industry, take a general knowledge test about forestry, and complete a ten-tree timber cruise.
