Daniel Hernandez – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – International football, or “soccer” as it is called in the US , is globally booming. The best of it takes place in Europe and numerous Mustangs are paying close attention.
Every year in professional European football there is a tournament that takes place from Sept. until May called the Union of European Football Association’s Champions League.
LRHS senior Lucas Villegas follows the Champions League yearly and has always been impressed by it.
“I think the Champions League is the best club tournament you can participate in,” Villegas said. “The Champions League is where the best teams from Europe are and where the best players are.”
The Champions League gets plenty of viewers every single year. The final game of the tournament generates global audiences between 112 million and 200 million viewers during live match broadcasts.
LRHS senior Nico Colacci has played soccer his whole life and he currently plays for Clearwater Chargers as a development academy player. He has been following the Champion’s League for a long time.
“I think the Champions League has influenced European football over the years by making the leagues more competitive,” said Colacci. “This year I believe that Barcelona will take home the Champions League and be named the best team in Europe.”
Soccer has never been the number one sport in the US but lately its popularity has been growing tremendously catching up to top US sports such as basketball and football.
