Swim team wins fourth straight county title

(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- The LRHS Swim Teams took home the title of Manatee County Champions for the fourth year in a row with a combined score of 842 points; the girls came in first place and the boys came in second place.

The Mustangs competed in the Manatee County Championship Meet on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the GT Bray Pool.

Both relay teams won the 400-yard Freestyle Relay, and the girls’ relay team won the 200-yard Medley Relay. The boys’ relay consisted of sophomore Frank Runge, junior Jacob Byrd, senior Will Reed and sophomore Dimiter Zafirov.

The girls’ freestyle relay consisted of senior Katelynn Coons, junior Suzanne Aguirre, sophomore Phoebe Duval, and senior Emily Massengale. The girls’ medley relay consisted of Massengale, freshman Rebecca Pilcher, Aguirre, and Coons.

Individual Mustang County Champions from this meet include Massengale in the girls’ 100-yard Backstroke, Pilcher in the girls’ 100-yard Breaststroke with a personal best time of 1 minute and 11.64 seconds, and Zafirov in the boys’ 200-yard Freestyle and the boys’ 500-yard Freestyle.

In addition to winning the meet, 10 Mustang Swimmers achieved new personal best times, and Zafirov was recognized for scoring 30 points for the team in his events.

Senior swimmers from all across the county were also acknowledged with a brief ceremony for their accomplishments in high school swimming over the years.

The LRHS Swim Team will compete again in the Tri-County Championship Meet on Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Selby Aquatic Center.
