Gavin Laielli – Mustangs Ahead
(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL) – Over the years many LRHS Mustangs have gone on to compete at the collegiate level. Former Mustang and current Dartmouth freshman Jonathan Reid, is racing track and running cross-country at the Division I level.
In Reid’s high school career, his personal records included a 4:15.59 in the 1600m, a 1:56.16 in the 800m, and a 9:24.58 in the 3200m. These times qualified Reid in the top 10 outdoor track rankings in Florida.
Reid said he’s settling into his new surroundings in New Hampshire.
“The environment is both very similar and different,” he said. “It’s the same in that I have great teammates who train together every day with the same goal of success in mind. The difference is the terrain. There are a lot more hills and trails, and it’s already cold up here. However, the new geography will just make me stronger, and so far I am enjoying it.”
The races in which they compete are different. At the high school level, the 5k race is most common speed test. However, in college, the 8k is the test of speed, consistency as well as endurance.
Reid continued “I am satisfied with how I’ve done so far. We had our first race two weeks ago which was the 8k. I didn’t know what to expect since I didn’t have any previous times. Training and workouts have gone well, too, and with a big team we are really able to push each other.”
LRHS varsity girls coach Kristin Wikstrom and former coach of Reid, said “Johnny is a great example of a role model, as he exemplifies speed and good leadership. I am proud of how he performed and excited to see his accomplishments in the future.”
