Sports(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- The Girls’ Varsity Cross Country team is moving up in state rankings.

After the Mustangs’ performance at the North Port Invitational last Saturday, they cracked the top 20 in the Florida High School Athletic Association 4A state rankings.

The Mustangs’ top five athletes’, Jessica Neal, Aurora Melzer, Mason Ingallinera, Sydney Granack, and Tamlyn Leatt, performances count towards the rankings.

The average time between the athletes is 20:07 for the 5K. The girls’ total score is 770, which sets them at 18th in the state.

“It’s honestly not a big surprise. I expected our girls to be a contender for states,” said the girls coach Kristin Wikstrom. “All of the girls are talented, dedicated athletes and the rankings reflect that.”

To qualify for states, the girls must be one of the top eight teams in their region. The Mustangs are currently ranked fifth in their region with a score of 123.

The regional race takes place on Nov. 2 at Lake Region High School in Winter Haven, Fl. The state meet will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee at Florida State University.
