(Lakewood Ranch, FL)- The LRHS varsity football team is 3-0 following their latest win.

The Mustangs defeated North Port 42-35 in overtime at home game Friday.

Senior Michael Cucci scored the winning touchdown, his fifth touchdown of the game

“After last year, and the last four years, we just haven’t won that many games, but we don’t give up,” Cucci told HTPreps.

Head coach Rashad West said, “Well the game didn’t go as I’d hoped, but I’m happy to get the win. I wish we played more consistent and didn’t turn the ball over quite as much as we did, but glad the kids kept fighting.

“Being 3-0 is great for the kids and especially the ones who have been in the program through all of the tough times. I thought we had some early games that we could win if we did the right things and we did for the most part so here we are at 3-0.”

The Mustangs have the week off. Their next scheduled game is away on Sept. 27 against Manatee High School at 7:30 p.m.

West said the week off is a mixed blessing.

“On one hand we have some momentum and you hate to break it, but on the other hand it gives us a chance to get healthy and improve a bit more before we get into district play,” he said.
