Mustangs swimmers start strong

Sports(LAKEWOOD RANCH, FL)- On Aug. 28 the LRHS Swim Team competed in the first meet of the season at home against Cardinal Mooney High School and Manatee High School with great success.

The girls team won with 126 points and the boys came in second place.

Both relay teams won the 400-yard Freestyle Relays; the girls’ relay consisted of freshman Rebecca Pilcher, sophomore Phoebe Duval, junior Suzanne Aguirre, and senior Katelynn Coons. The boys’ relay team consisted of freshman Carter Kaufford, sophomore Frank Runge, sophomore Dimiter Zafirov, and junior Jacob Byrd.

Individual winners from this meet include –

  • Will Reed in the 200-yard Freestyle
  • Coons in the 100-yard Freestyle
  • Zafirov in the 100-yard Freestyle and 100-yard Backstroke
  • Pilcher in the 100-yard Breaststroke

Some highlights from the individual races were Pilcher’s win in her event by more than 7 seconds, and Zafirov who won his event by over 4 seconds.

“It was a good first meet to get the nerves out of the way racing for the first time this season,” said head coach Kyle Steinberg, “I’m looking forward to getting faster each meet.”

The next LRHS swim meet is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5 at the John Marble Pool.
